Cellier du Chartreux Origine Rouge 2021 highlights Marselan, a modern grape variety created in 1961 by Professor Paul Truel through crossing Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache.

Originally bred for the Languedoc to combine Cabernet’s structural finesse with Grenache’s natural heat tolerance, the variety takes its name from Marseillan, a coastal town along the Mediterranean.

Because Marselan features small berries with a high skin-to-juice ratio, it delivers an intensely deep purple hue, smooth yet firm tannins, and deep dark berry aromas.

Grenache completes the blend, contributing supple texture and vibrant red fruit flavors of strawberry and raspberry.

Thriving in extreme heat and drought while ripening predictably, Marselan plays an increasingly vital role across global vineyards, from Argentina, Brazil, Spain, and the US to China, where it has seen extensive planting outside France.

Recently approved in Bordeaux to help combat warming temperatures, Marselan offers a compelling look at the future of Mediterranean red winemaking.
